- I've never spent any time on the isles, so I do find it to help to be able to look at this illustrated history of coins of the UK. When reading historical British novels, I always have to think about the difference between sovereigns and guineas, for instance.

- By way of contrast, Billy Collins comments that"There's an abundance of unreadable poetry out there." Oh yes. I remember going to hear an eminent poet read at one of the Dodge Poetry Festivals, a winner of the National Book Award and a Macarthur Fellowship, and being very disappointed at how incoherent and self-indulgent the poems sounded.
