Scandal in town
Here in
Dumont,
there's trouble at the mill. Yesterday, the Republican mayor the last 14
years has resigned owing to charges that under that party's watch there
has been mismanagement of finances and criminal action. The
investigation of overdue utility payments and missing local tax reserves
started last Fall and accelerated when the elections put the Democrats
into the majority on the Borough Council. In recent weeks, the former
Borough Administrator and Treasurer have been charged with official
misconduct and with theft respectively, and the local tax rates have
been raised 10% last year and this in order to cover a shortfall of some
$1M.
